I was recently recommended a book by a well respected leader. This individual has had tremendous influence on the lives and careers of many individuals. I was curious to know what his answer would be when I asked the question and he ultimately did not disappoint. I’ve learned that people are typically the sum total of the books they read and the people they hang around.
In other words, be careful of what and who you listen to, as it will have a major impact on your life without your permission.
He finally answered me and said, “Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferris.” This was significant because I was familiar with the author from his more popular book, “The Four Hour Work Week,” but was not aware that this book was released.
I didn’t take much time to ask questions or read a lot of reviews. I simply ordered the book and added it to my library.
When the book arrived, I was a bit surprised at how thick it was (nearly 600 pages), but it gave me some insight into this leader. Many people will agree that you can tell a lot about a person by the books he recommends.
Mentors Make The Difference
First, you don’t read 600 page books unless you have already made reading a habit. It was obvious to me that he practices reading on a daily basis. This book was just one of many he could’ve recommended. Secondly, the subject of the book gives you another clue on the reason for his success.
Tribe of Mentors is essentially a 600 page interview of various achievers in the world from different backgrounds and industries. It is an opportunity to gain insightful wisdom from successful individuals who have excelled over others within their field. As a leader, this was his subtle way of demonstrating the importance of a mentor or coach.
The Bottom Line
If you want to be successful at something, find someone who has already achieved what you desire and follow the same formula they used to get there.
We live in a world of laws and principles. Much of what you would like to gain can be acquired by simply finding the right formula and doing it. It’s quite simple in theory, but it may not be easy to execute. Regardless, you will need to believe that you can achieve, and then you will need to persevere until you reach your goal. I encourage you to seek out the clues that success has left for you and just do it. John Wooden, arguably the greatest coach in the history of basketball said it this way,
“Make each day your masterpiece.”
